This Fall season is abundant with trends!
That can be a good thing.
However, don’t go to town on all of them…really don’t go to town on any.
I’m a person who is aware of the trends but I don’t follow many. I encourage you to do the same. Unless the trend suits your personality and you really like it, then find a piece or two, that works well with your existing wardrobe.
You don’t want to buy a piece and then discover that you have nothing to wear with it or you don’t know how to wear it. Otherwise it will sit there in your closet, unworn waiting for you to find a mate to match it up with.
That is not a good thing.
After studying the Fall trends this is the conclusion I came to: “Unless you’re 20 something, or a Fashion Maverick Personality, many of these Fall trends probably won’t suit you.”
That’s why I’m going to share with you…
The 6 Top Trends to avoid:
- Layered Eveningwear: Remember Grunge? It didn’t work for most of us in the 90’s and it won’t work for most of us now.
- Ultra Stacked Heels: Don’t go there unless it’s Halloween or you’re a Drag Queen.
- The Puffer Coat on Steroids: You should only be seen in something this puffy while you’re camping. Think “Sleeping bag.”
- Ultra Padded Shoulders (reminiscent of the 80’s heyday of Power Dressing): Unless you want to make your head appear small and out of proportion, I would avoid this extremism. Caveat: If you are a Triangle Body-Type, shoulder pads will be your BFF, but just make sure you don’t go too far with “the pad.”
- The 1980’s Revisited: Aka -The Age of Excess. It isn’t just about big shoulder pads, it’s about excessiveness shown through the exaggeration of style, color, details – you name it. Oh, and don’t forget all those hideous patterns.
- Corsets: Unless you’re channeling Catherine de Medici, or too lazy to slim and trim your waist, other than by wearing a “waist trainer,” I don’t think wearing an uncomfortable, constraining corset is worth the suffering you’re sure to experience.
So…while you’re out there shopping, and you stumble upon one of these trends, I suggest that you smile smugly and appreciate the creativity of fashion, and then pat yourself on the back for knowing that you don’t have to waste your time and money on them, because you know better. 🙂
Next time I’ll talk about the trends that I do feel are worth investing in this Fall. So stay tuned.
Now, it’s your turn. I’d love to hear from you. Your insights and inspiration are appreciated so please share your stories in the comments below.
If you have a question also post it in the comment section below. I check it daily. Since the topic is always about fashion or style no question that you ask will be “off Topic.”
That means as far as I’m concerned, when you ask a question that is the topic. Everyone else who’s reading it can follow up on my answer. There will be no questions that you ask that will be too far off topic because your question will be the current topic. So…ask away!
Oh…and your email address is not “required” even though it says so. 🙂 Don’t even ask.
Blog me.

Nice Michelle! And I love the pics. I have a stacked heel (I call them my Lady Gaga shoes) which you’ve seen and I love them! Get compliments every time I wear them… Perhaps it’s the outfit that I’m wearing it which makes them work somehow, not sure!
Dear, Keren,
Thank you! It works because YOU are a Fashion Maverick my dear! I know that stacked heel you wear and it totally works!
As I stated…Unless you’re 20 something, or a Fashion Maverick Personality, many of these Fall trends probably won’t suit you.” Please notice how I didn’t say “all” wouldn’t suit you…just “many probably” won’t suit you. 🙂 Most of my clients can’t rock the Lady Gaga shoe like you nor are they a Fashion Maverick personality. YOU do this look well!
Most stacked shoes are fine…the ultra one is pushing it for anyone who isn’t on the cutting edge. I posted the 6 trends because many women are concerned that they have to follow ALL the trends to be “fashionable.” Not true which is why I stated that “….most probably won’t suit you.”
Thanks for bringing this up. I think I will address this more clearly in my next newsletter. I don’t want women to think that they can’t wear these, I just want them to know “they don’t have to” to be considered fashionable. Would you mind if I included your comment?
