The Classic White TI can’t imagine my life without one. (Actually three would be ideal!) It would be like going to the beach on a hot summer day sans a bathing suit. It just wouldn’t ever happen. I’m always in search for the next perfect one.

The White T-Shirt.

In the early 1900’s Navy men wore the T-shirt as an undergarment. It soon made it’s way to the military where it became standard issue during WWII. The classic white cotton jersey crewneck was born.

Leave it up to Chanel who adapted this fabric that was traditionally used for underwear into fashionable items for women in the 1920’s. And still, even with Chanel’s strong influence at the time, it didn’t become a popular staple till many decades later.

Today the search for the perfect white T sometimes feels as challenging as the quest for the holy grail. I ought to know. I’m in the stores shopping, and my quest is never quite fulfilled. Yes, I’ve found a few that fill the bill in many ways but after a few washings not many stand up to the test of time. Everlasting impeccable quality, in my opinion, is no where to be found. (sigh)

If you’re like me, where quality is up high on your list (And I hope it is!), here are 5 characteristics that make a great white T in my book:

  1. 100% cotton or 98/2 (Cotton/Spandex) if you want to add a little figure-hugging stretch.
  2. Pima cotton, Sea Island, Egyptian, Cotton cashmere. (Not cashmere but cotton made to feel like cashmere)
  3. From tissue-weight to heavy cotton jerseys.  (To suit your seasonal needs.)
  4. Washes and wears well. (No major shrinking. Side-seams lay flat and square after washing – not twisting. Holds its shape when worn.)
  5. The cotton can actually get softer as it ages. (If it starts to pill or holes appear in the side-seams or stitch lines, the quality is no good.)

When it comes to the silhouette, nowadays there are a few choices when it comes to the classic T. What style you wear depends on 4 things:

  1. Your Body-Type (Do you look good in a crewneck or does the neck opening need to be wider or deeper to flatter? Looser or more fitted sleeve or body? Pocket?);
  2. The occasion or event you’re attending (Casual weekend? Date night?);
  3. Other garments you’re going to wear with it (Ripped up jeans, skirt or trousers and a jacket?);
  4. Accessories (Statement necklace? Scarf?).

The beauty of a white cotton T is that it’s a blank canvas that can be worn casually or dressed up to elevate an outfit. Instead of explaining how to style a T, here’s a few pictures to inspire you:
