I recently gave a presentation of the Spring Style Trends for the Silicon Valley Capital Club Women’s Luncheon Series.
Thank you Esther for inviting me back again this year! I so loved meeting all of the fabulous women who attended. I know you know who you are but for those who left me your business cards so that you could be added to my newsletter mailings, I personally wanted to give a shout out of thanks for attending!
Thanks (in no particular order) to you: Arlene, Louise, Mariane, Viktoriya, Wilma, Rita, Sandy, Denise, Leola, Guiselle, Jennifer, Sheryl, Doris and Esther. I hope that I haven’t left any of you out. If I did, please accept my apology!
Since then, I have heard from a few of you that wanted a recap so that you could use it as your own little “Cheat Sheet” when you go shopping this Spring. So I thought, “Why not! My readers would probably love to know the Spring trends too!”
A week or so ago, I sent out my Spring mailer to all of my clients offering them shopping sprees to fill in some items they were missing from their Spring wardrobe. Thanks to many of you who have scheduled with me! I am excited to shop in a very exciting season. If you haven’t booked a shopping spree with me for Spring, I am still setting up appointments.
When many of you scheduled your shopping spree with me, most of you inquired about the Spring trends so that you could include some of these trends in your shopping list. That sealed the deal for me to make the Spring Trends the topic of my next blog write. So…here it goes!
SPRING 2015 “CHEAT SHEET”
Spring 2015 Style Trends:
- Culottes: Yes, they are back! Take the silhouette to work this season by pairing it with blazers, tailored button-downs, and high heels.
- 70’s Midi Skirt: As described, the length is at the “mid” calf. You can wear the same way as you would culottes, spice it up for evening, or dress it down for day.
- Trouser Suit: Not your typical power suit from the 80’s – lose the shoulder pads (if it works for your Body-Type) and either crop the jacket or make it longer to mid thigh or below for a new modern look.
- Crop Tops: They showed up last Fall and they are perfect for Spring. Pair them with ladylike skirts replacing dresses and gowns with skirt lengths from below the knee to midi and maxi. Also pair them with a higher waisted pant which will make your legs look longer. If you are concerned about showing your tummy, layer the crop top over a blouse or a shirt too. Or look for a dress that has a cropped top look within the dress creating a layered look from a one-piece dress.
- The Fancy Apron: Finally, a new layering trick for the more daring fashion girl. Rock a skirt, whether short or long, over a another skirt, a dress or pants, for a look that is visually interesting and totally cool. (This look is especially fitting for fashion forward gals, aka: my “Fashion Maverick” clients!)
- Shirtdress: This classic has made a comeback in a big way. This season you’ll see the classic shirtdress but with new, modern, and dare I say, “sexy” details – Everything from drop waists to double high slits, and more.
- Denim: Everything from Chambray to dark wash denim and black denim. You’ll see styles in unexpected silhouettes from denim suits, to denim wrap dresses (My fave TDF! (To Die For!) that I highlighted in my presentation is by DVF!)
- Floral Prints: Floral prints were bigger, bolder, and more head-to-toe than we’ve seen in seasons. Never has the concept of florals for spring felt fresher: Big and beautiful or minimal and abstract. This season, flower power is boldly feminine and here to stay!
- Gingham: From skirts to two-pieces suits (shorts suits too!) to flowing midi house dresses with matching cardigans. You’ll see everything from small Gingham to oversized and even abstract like my red/white jacket that many of you “ooh’d and awed” over at the Capital Club presentation!
- Spring Leather and Suede: Cut-outs, color-blocked and 70’s lace-up patches. The soft touch of leather and suede will be seen in everything from neutrals to spring colors and black.
- Boho Is back!: Tie-dye, fringe, patchwork, and ethnic floral prints – (think “American Indian prints”) – will be the excitement of your wardrobe, whether you don this look from head to toe, or you just dip your toe into this trend by wearing a fringe handbag to compliment your outfit. Either way Boho style is here to stay – At least for this Spring. 🙂
- Utilitarian: A utilitarian (Military) undercurrent is manifesting itself this Spring! Time to hit the army-surplus store now because you’re going to want all the necessary regalia. Just kidding! Many designers took the literal route when it came to their creations, but you are better off choosing streamlined military-style pieces that come in the olive-drab shade in style such as lace-strewn fatigues and parachute silk coats.
- White Lace: Bridal type laces in delicate to heave re-embroidered, are re-imagined for un-wedding dresses and day wear.
- Yellow: From amber and canary to saffron and marigold, trust that there is a shade of yellow for everyone. The trick is figuring out your skin’s undertone, then finding the hue that best compliments it.
- Black and White: No surprise here. But what makes this season’s take on the classic color combination interesting, are the various textures, patterns, and silhouettes that you will see in this very popular and classic combination.
- Head To Toe White: Nowadays, isn’t about the rules of when you can wear all white; it’s about how you wear it. Mix your textures and layer multiple pieces. Helpful clue: Don’t try and match your whites. It is much more interesting to mix a variety of shades together in the same outfit.
-
Navy Is The New Black: From midnight blue to deep indigo. Wear it alone or if black and white is too strong of a color contrast, navy and white is the next best thing.
- Military Greens: Don’t be surprised to see straight-up camouflage in khaki and olive drab. Though don’t make the mistake and head out to shop at your local army surplus to pick them up. – that would be taking this trend just a tad too far!
Now, it’s your turn. I’d love to hear from you. What do you think of the Spring trends? Which ones are you going to follow? Is there a trend that you are definitely going to pass on? Your insights and inspiration are appreciated so please share your stories and thoughts in the comments below.
Blog me.

Dear, Michelle,
I loved reading about all of the trends, but like many girls, shoes are my thing. I was hoping that you would talk about the shoe trends. So I am putting in a request. Thanks!
Tyna
Hi, Tyna,
Thank you for your suggestion. I have received e-mails asking the same thing so I will try and work it in the schedule. So many requests and I only blog ever two weeks! 🙂 Thanks for reading!
Love,
~Michelle
Hey Michelle,
I love your blog. I found this particular article very interesting. My favorite spring trend is the white lace. I make my own lace and it is a process that is very time consuming but like people who like to knit, I like to make lace. So seeing this trend show up in so many different types of laces is fun. Thanks for such a cool way to display the clothes.
Sophie
Hi, Sophie,
Thank you! How creative you must be! I know someone who also makes her own lace and I agree with you, it is quite a process.
I love lace too. I was first introduced to fine laces many years ago when I used to work with Jessica McClintock on her couture line. That is where my love for lace began, so I am just as excited about this trend as you are!

~Michelle
Another wonderful article Michelle! I have always loved the color yellow. I’m excited to go shopping so that I can pick out something that looks good on me. Wish me luck. Thank you!
