Rose Quartz & Serenity.
For the first time Pantone has chosen to blend two shades for their color of the year: The warm rose tone (Rose Quartz) is combined with the cool tranquil blue (Serenity).
Yes, I realize that 2016 is almost over but after this week’s presidential election, where we have certainly showed that we are a country divided, in need of coming together, I thought it would be apropos to talk about the blending of color and the effect it can have on our psyche.
Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times. (-Pantone)
No matter whom you voted for in this presidential election, I think we can all agree that compassion, composure, respite, and relaxation is called upon in turbulent times.
Stress is present in our lives. Color has energy. When we wear colors they can express to others how we feel. Colors can change moods: They can affect our personal feelings as well as the feelings of those around us.
As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. (-Pantone)
When you chose colors and combine them into your outfit notice how you feel. Brighter colors combined can uplift and invigorate your mood. Softer muted colors can bring a sense of calm. Certain colors can move people toward you – I have written about “relatable” colors in past newsletters – and other colors can push people away.
Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace. (-Pantone)
A sense of comfort can be felt when you learn the power of color and to use it as a form of expression.
My request for you in the next few weeks is to play around with color when you get dressed. Be mindful of the colors you choose and take notice of the following:
- How do you personally feel? Are you more anxious or more relaxed? Excited or tranquil?
- How do others feel around you? Are your colors inspiring, uplifting, calming?
- How do others react when you wear certain colors? Do the colors you wear draw people toward you in curiosity or away from you by intimidation?
I often say that your style is making a statement about who you are to the world. Know too that the colors you wear are not only saying something about you but often evoking certain feelings in yourself and others. Tune into this and you’ll experience the power of color.
Now, it’s your turn. I’d love to hear from you. Your insights and inspiration are appreciated so please share your stories in the comments below.
If you have a question also post it in the comment section below. I check it daily. Since the topic is always about fashion or style no question that you ask will be “off Topic.”
That means as far as I’m concerned, when you ask a question that is the topic. Everyone else who’s reading it can follow up on my answer. There will be no questions that you ask that will be too far off topic because your question will be the current topic. So…ask away!
Oh…and your email address is not “required” even though it says so. 🙂 Don’t even ask.

Michelle,
I am so distraught by the results of this election I can’t think straight. I have heeded your advice about choosing colors that are soothing. It helps but it is going to take a lot more than my clothing to soothe my nerves.
Love,
Alice
Alice,
I know how you feel. I seem to go to bed with it and wake up with it. I agree. Turning to color is great but I also have a wonderful support of sisters – my anecdote to all of this. And of course getting out there and making my voice heard. Hang in there.

Today, I carefully chose something pretty using my favorite color combo to wear this morning and felt wonderful all day. It helps to spend a few extra minutes putting yourself together and I believe it is vitally important for one’s own mental state of the equation.
Have a lovely and cozy evening Michelle, fredie
p.s. My colors today was two shades, pink and grey….
Fredie,
It’s been fun hearing from you so often. I’m delighted that you are embracing color because you are aware of the power of color! And I agree with you about the importance of taking a few extra minutes. It can make such a difference in how smoothly or not you day can go.
Love,
~Michelle
PS: Love the pink and grey combo. It reminds me of one of my favorite pairs of pjs that I designed. 🙂
Michelle,
I believe in the power of color. I love wearing bright colors because it always cheers me up. Let’s just say, in this political environment, I’ve been living in bright colors. Thank you!
xx
Susan
Hi, Susan,
Woo Hoo! You go girl! Yes, bright colors will cheer you up and those around you. We could certainly use a lot more cheerful colors during this trying and uncertain country we’re living in. Keep wearing the brights!
