“Accessorize? Yeah, right. I have no idea what to do. I wear my favorite scarf the same way every day. Belts? Yep, got ‘em. But I never wear them. I’m embarrassed to say, I don’t know how to wear one. Really. Isn’t that crazy?”
Does this sound like you?
I’ve been talking to a few girls this week about style and believe it or not this was a topic of conversation. Accessorizing is frustrating for many because no one is quite sure how to wear accessories and pull them off with confidence.
I love accessories for 5 reasons:
- They dress up a casual outfit: Jeans and a tee isn’t very exciting (In fact they can give you the blues – pun intended!) But toss on a few accessories such as a chunky belt, a colorful scarf, and a French beret, your look is elevated from “casual” to “Check-me-out Chic.”
- They take an outfit from plain-vanilla to vanilla raspberry swirl sorbet!: Bored with your boardroom basics? Nothing can put a spark in your step more than bling! Don on a statement necklace (Yes, you can!), a bold ring or two, and a colorful watch, and watch your outfit go from “Boardroom Boring” to “Bold and Brilliant!”
- They really help show off your personal style: Do you like bold color-blocking or florals? Are you a Boho Chick, a Modern Maven, or Classic Kelly Girl? Wear accessories* that compliment your style personality, and find ways that are unique as you.
- They can create a memorable “Style Signature.”: Wearing a type of accessory on a daily basis gives you a signature that people will remember you by. Think Jackie Onassis and her big sunglasses.
- They create a put-together look: Any outfit that doesn’t have at least a few accessories will not look complete or put-together…like there’s something missing. And there is! Put some on. 🙂
Ok..so you’re probably thinking…”Great reasons, Michelle. And I get it. But I still don’t know how. Can you give me some general rules, tips…something, please?”
Ask and you shall receive!
Here are my top 3 that I personally live by:
- This one is a pet peeve: If you’ve got belt loops and they are going to be seen in your outfit, make sure you’re wearing a belt. I don’t care if you’re only doing a front tuck and all I see of your pant or skirt waistband is 4” in the front, thread a belt through. Nuff said – K?
- Learn at least 3 ways to wear a scarf around your neck: *Then play with some other ways to wear them that shows a bit of your personality. Wrap a scarf around your head, tie a small one on your wrist and top it off with a cool bracelet or watch. Take a skinny scarf and loop it through your belt loops and finish it off in a bow. Drape a large square scarf over your shoulder and lock it in with a belt around your waist, a la ‘Out of Africa.” Get creative ladies! You can do it! And you can wear it!
- Learn to love jewelry: I’m always surprised when a girl tells me she doesn’t wear any. Wha’at?! That is one of the benefits about being a girl. We have soo many choices to pick from (OK if the variety of choices is the problem, get clear on your style and then find pieces to compliment.) It doesn’t have to be expensive fine jewelry or big and bold. Find a few pieces that make you smile, feel pretty, or shout out “That is soo ME!” Even if it’s just a leather wristband with a small silver surfboard charm dangling from it. 🙂
That’s it for this week.
Now, it’s your turn. I’d love to hear from you. Your insights and inspiration are appreciated so please share your stories in the comments below. Oh…and your email address is not “required” even though it says so. 🙂 Don’t even ask.

Hi michelle,
I decided to come back and ask a question about capris. The summer is here and I am confused about capris. I have fairly short legs so I’m not sure if they work on me, but I don’t want to wear shorts. Do you have any suggestions. Thx!
Love,
Sonja
Hi, Sonja,
Yes, the summer is here! Thanks for your question.
With the warmer weather it’s always nice to show a little more leg. However, if you have short legs, or you’re just short like me, you probably feel the same way that I do, and the last thing we want to do is make our legs appear even shorter. Unfortunately capris will do that.
I’m not a big fan of capris for two reason. The one I already stated and the fact that they cut the prettiest part of your leg, the calf, in half. So I avoid them. And that goes for most women except if you’re really tall with thin legs and you want to give a shorter appearance.
For the rest of us, I would say opt for a ankle length pant or slightly above the ankle. It is a super sexy part of your leg and is enough to show for a summer look if you don’t want to wear shorts.
I hope that is helpful! Happy Summer!

~Michelle
Michele,
I got your email and I get it. No problem. I’m sorry if I ask you too many questions. I appreciate you always answering them for me. i will post my questions here from now on. Thanks!
Aziza
Hi, Aziza,
Nice to see you here again. Thank you. No need to apologize. I enjoy answering any question that has to do with style. I just want to help as many people as I can with their style and this seems to be the best venue for me to do that. So ask away!
Love,

Michelle,
I got your newsletter. I’m a little confused about what to do. You want us to ask any questions that we have here on your blog? What if it doesn’t relate to your topic? I feel foolish bringing up an issue that is not in line with the topic being discussed. Is there some other way to handle this?
Sue
Hi, Sue,
Let’s see if I can clear up your confusion. I am trying to make the blog “Topic Specific” so that the questions you ask become what the blog is all about at that moment.
That means as far as I’m concerned, when you ask a question that is the topic. Everyone else who’s reading it can follow up on my answer. There will be no questions that you ask that will be too far off topic because your question will be the topic. After all no questions can really be off the topic because I’m guessing every question is going to be about style or fashion. 🙂
The purpose of our blog is to give everyone an opportunity to benefit from, and share in, all the questions asked and for you to view them or be able to reread them at your leisure.
Love,
~Michelle
Ok, Michelle, I’ll bite. This has nothing to do with your topic, but today is the summer solstice. I want to know how I can wear all white for the summer and not look like I’m attending an ashram or looking out of place when I work in a big city.
Thanks,
Lisa
Hi, Lisa,
I think your question needs an entire newsletter written about it. I will do that so stay tuned!
Love,
~Michelle
Sorry, but I’m not going to put my question to you as a comment on an unrelated blog topic. I’ll work it out myself.
Hi, I’m sorry that you are not comfortable posting a question that is unrelated to the current topic. I would like to answer your question but first let me explain.
I am trying to make the blog “Topic Specific” so that the questions you ask become what the blog is all about at that moment.
That means as far as I’m concerned, when you ask a question that is the topic. Everyone else who’s reading it can follow up on my answer. Now to the question: Your “Q:”
Dear Michelle –
As a triangle adding to her summer wardrobe (hoping it warms up), I have a question – am I looking for dark pants and skirts, or darker-than-the-tops pants and skirts? In other words, do khaki’s work if I’m wearing a lighter top, or are truly dark-colors in pants and skirts best year round.
Looking forward to your advice!
My “A:”
As a Triangle you do not have to wear dark on the bottoms always. You are correct with saying that the bottoms must just be darker than the tops. So yes, if you want to wear Khaki pants, just wear a top that is lighter! As always boatneck tops or a sleeve with a shoulder pad will always create more balance.
Nice to hear from you! Have a wonderful summer. I hope that it warms up too!
Love,
~Michelle
Michelle,
I took your body type quiz and I am an inverted triangle. this was no surprise. I like my broad shoulders so can I wear black pants?
Thanks,
Hi, Sandy,
Thanks for taking my quiz and for sharing your results!
I am an Inverted Triangle too, and like you, I also like my broad shoulders, and let me tell you, mine are super broad compared to my hips.
So, no problem. You can definitely wear black pants. If you wear head to toe black, it will not make your shoulders appear any larger or your hips any smaller, because there is no contrast between the top and the pants you are wearing. Just know that if you do go lighter on the top it will broaden your shoulder. The lighter you go the broader your shoulders will look, making your hips look even smaller with your black pants. So you want to take that into consideration when you get dressed.
However if you want to create a more balanced look you can play with color and silhouette to create a more hourglass look if you desire. Here are two tips:
1. If you wear a really light color on top, add a halter or raglan sleeve top, or a blouse that has some details at the hem, such as ruffles or a peplum to give some width to your hips, to balance your broad shoulders.
2. skinny jeans or pants will widen your hips so take that into consideration when you wear black pants with your tops.
Great Question. I hope that helps!
Love,
~Michelle
