I promised this letter to be all about the guys, but before I begin, I’ve got to say something about an event I participated in two weekends ago, “The Happy Healthy You Event.”
And by the way, speaking of guys, I was surprised to see all of the gentleman there at the event – it was such a nice surprise. I promise from now on you will not be remiss in my invitations for special events that I am promoting. Now, as promised…
#1 – Elevate your shoes.
- Wear heel inserts inside your shoes. If you aren’s already wearing a thick heel, by adding a heel insert you can increase your height by an inch or more.
- Wear a dress shoe with a moderate heel. For best results, stick with black loafer-style shoes or boots with a 1/2″ heel.
#2 – Pant details.
- Create a soft pant break on your shoe. Make sure that you hem your pants so that they brush against the laces of your shoes. Pants that are too long bunching up at the bottom, only draws the eye downward giving attention to your short stature. I see this way too often with men. Also avoid turning up pants at the hemline, especially jeans, as the inside contrast color will create a thick horizontal line that will shorten the leg.
- Don’t wear cuffed pants. A cuff creates a horizontal line, therefore shortening you.
- Wear pants that hit at your natural waist. This will maximize the length of your leg.
#3 – Wear darker pants. Wearing darker colored trousers and dark wash jeans has a slimming look, creating a longer leg line.
#4 – Wear your casual untucked shirts shorter. A shorter shirt will expose more of your leg, creating the illusion of both leg length and overall height. Look for shirts or have your casual shirts tailored so that the front hem ends around the base of your thumb. However, be careful that the shorter shirt doesn’t look like it’s too small for you.
#5 – Wear a skinny tie. Jon Stewart dons one all the time. The narrow tie will draw the eye up and down your body, making you appear taller.
Speaking of comedians, let me just take a break here and say that the comedian at The Happy Healthy You Event was hilarious! Sandy Stec, the stories you told were intimate, from the heart, and resonated with so many of us. The laughter in the room was contagious – I had so much fun! Thank you for being so authentic and totally amusing and uplifting!
#6 – Add height to your hairstyle. If it is flattering to your face shape, keep the sides of your hair neatly trimmed and add extra volume at the top to add inches to your height.
#7 – Wear a shorter jacket length. If it suits your Body-Type, wear a shorter jacket so that more of your leg line is seen and it keeps the admirer’s eye higher on your silhouette.
#8 – Wear a monochromatic outfit. When you wear one color or tones that are within the same range from head to toe in your outfit, it will create a solid line and you will appear taller, because you have no color breaks. It doesn’t matter what the color or tones are, as long as it suits your personal coloring. By Having your outfit divided into less segments, it creates the illusion of height.
Joie Garrity, you rocked your monochromatic look at The Happy Healthy You Event! What I loved best is how you wore your scarf framing your face, which complimented your high contrast coloring perfectly. You are the queen of branding and it shows! You know how important dressing is for your brand. No.113 BRANDING – “Leveraging your unique brand in life and at work.”
#9 – Wear vertical stripes. Vertical lines draw the eye up and down, which causes the eye to take in more height than width. Hence, a pinstripe suit will create a long lean line. Not into wearing suits? Pinstripe pants or pants pressed down the center of the leg running from the top of the thigh to the hem will also create a long lean line.
#10 – Wear clothing that is fitted. Wear clothing that is tailored to your Body-Type will keep the focus on the length. Loose or oversized garments can add weight therefore actually making you seem wider and shorter than you are.
I can’t speak enough about the importance of fit. Let me just say that Italina Kirknis wore a classic Calvin Klein dress at The Happy Healthy You Event, and this girl knows how to don a dress with a perfect fit. No surprise, her “Style Signature” is dresses. For on-line branding, Italina, you are the go-to girl!
When you’re looking your best and happy and healthy, there’s nothing better than being surrounded by your loving family, friends, and significant other. If there’s no significant love in your life right now and you would like one, I have a woman that you need to meet!
Her name is Ronnie Joy. I met her at The Happy Healthy You Event. No guys, I am not playing cupid here. Ronnie is the midlife dating coach. So guys and gals: If you’re need a little help finding the love in your life, or just want to meet someone of interest, I suggest you give Ronnie Joy a call.
Combine several of these tips together in one outfit to create a longer leaner look, creating a taller appearance, therefore achieving more self confidence. Have fun and experiment with several tips to discover which ones work best for you!
- Wear shoes with no heel.
- Break up your height by color-blocking your outfit. No monochromatic. Visually divide your body into several segments by wearing different colors, i.e., Wear a different color jacket from your pants, shoes, shirt, etc.
- Round toed shoes will decrease your height.
- Cuff pants will also decrease your height.
- Stay away from vertical stripes – wear horizontal striped to add width.
- Wear looser fitting clothing, but be careful that you don’t go too loose or unstructured creating a sloppy look. Fit is still very important.
- Wear a crew neck or boatneck t-shirt, to draw the eye from side to side, diverting the admirer from noticing your height.
- Wear shirts with a wider spread collar to add width.
- Wear belts at the waist in a contrasting color will divide you in half causing you to look shorter.
That’s it for this week. Now, it’s your turn. I’d love to hear from you. Your insights and inspiration are appreciated so please share your stories in the comments below.
