-CSQ- # 47 Prince in Polka Dots!

I mourn the death of not only a prolific artist but a fashion icon in his own right.

PRINCE.

I speak about dressing authentically in many of my writes. PRINCE was authentic to the core. He cared less about what people thought of his racy, provocative, and many times honoring the femme, style. Often times his personal choices would leave people constantly guessing about his sexual preference.

I couldn’t care less myself. Yes, he was racy. Yes, he was provocative. And yes, he could don a glitter tee, perfectly painted on eye liner, pucker in stained lips, and prance around in heels as well, giving the hottest female artists of our time a little run for the money. I just loved his music and his over the top maverick style.

Thank you PRINCE for many a nights that I danced to your music till the nightclubs closed. No doubt you’re still doing your thing in the heavens above.

If a man can wear polka dots, and PRINCE certainly did, so can you. And I’m not just speaking to the ladies but to you gentleman as well.

Polka dots are a classic. They first showed up in the fashion scene on a muslin scarf back in 1857. In 1926 Miss America had her dots donned on her swimsuit. America loved this print so much polka dots took over the fashion world and became a staple in one’s wardrobe.

“Old Blue Eyes” wore a button-front in 1940 in honor of his newly released song, “Polka Dots and Moonbeams.” Marilyn Monroe was photographed in a polka dot bikini in 1951 – This snapshot is one of the most famous photographs of her. This whimsical print was a favorite of Lucille Ball who wore them on and off set.

We’ve seen polka dots come in and out of the fashion world sporadically, not nearly as often as I personally would like. I’m a big fan of the dot. More choices! More choices, please!

If you want to jump in on this classic look, know that polka dots are always in style. If black and white is too high contrast for you, pick a polka dot in a color that suits you.

Like a leopard print, polka dots mix well with other prints such as florals, stripes, and other dots! The key to mixing different prints is to vary the size of the prints in your outfit.

Guys, don’t even think that a polka dotted shirt is where it ends for you. Dots are showing up in shorts, ties, socks, shoes, and tennies. The choice is yours! What will you dare to wear?
